A used electric motorcycle can be a great deal – or a very expensive lesson. The biggest unknown is the battery: it can cost thousands of euros, and you cannot see its condition from the outside.
1. Battery
- ask to see it charge and check the voltage when fully charged;
- test ride and watch for sharp voltage sag under throttle;
- ask how many cycles it has, how it was stored in winter and whether it was ever fully drained;
- make sure the original charger is included.
2. Electronics
- no error codes on the display;
- all modes, lights and indicators work (road-legal bikes);
- wiring and connectors undamaged, without corrosion or water marks;
- is the controller original or replaced (if replaced, ask for documents).
3. Documents and frame number
- the frame (VIN) number must match the documents;
- for a road-legal bike – registration documents;
- a purchase invoice or other proof of ownership;
- if the number is ground off, damaged or there are no documents – walk away.
4. Chassis
- fork seals – no oil leaks;
- swingarm and headset bearings – no play;
- chain, sprockets, belt – wear;
- frame – cracks, weld marks after crashes;
- brake discs and pads.
Red flags
- vague answers about the battery;
- no charger or documents;
- mismatched frame number;
- pressure to buy quickly, refusal of a test ride;
- a price far below the market.
Questions to ask the seller
- Where and how was the bike stored in winter?
- How often and how was the battery charged?
- Who did the maintenance – are there records?
- Has the bike been modified?
- Why are you selling?
