Wire-Based vs Mechanical E-Bike Tuning Kits

There are two main types of tuning kits, and both serve different riders.

Wire-based tuning kits

Popular examples include:

  • VOLspeed

  • SpeedBox

  • Peartune

  • SpeedFun

  • Levociraptor

These kits connect directly to the motor system.

Advantages:

  • smooth and stable assistance

  • accurate or semi-accurate speed display

  • adjustable speed limits

  • activation through display, app or Always ON

Disadvantages:

  • installation requires removing the motor cover

Once installed, these kits feel almost factory-integrated.

Mechanical tuning kits

Examples include:

  • Badass Box

  • NLS Speedi

These operate externally using a modified speed sensor signal.

Advantages:

  • very fast installation

  • removable in seconds

  • no wiring changes

Disadvantages:

  • incorrect speed readings

  • Lower top speed, around 37kmh or 23mph

Mechanical kits are ideal for riders who want flexibility.
