If you ride a lot in tough offroad conditions, though mud and water, you may find that older grips which have lost their elasticity can spin, making you lose your grip on the handlebar or even crash when instead of the full-throttle pull you were expecting you get a handful of slipping grips and no torque.

A trick many hard enduro riders use is to twist a strand of wire pretty tight on the grooves that sit by your thumbs on the grips. If you don't overdo it and cut the grips right through, this trick helps them stay in place at all times.
