What Does It mean to Derestrict an Electric Bike?

Derestricting an electric bike refers to removing the pedal assistance limit that restricts your bike from exceeding a speed of 20 mph. The limit is put in place to prevent your bike’s motor from releasing all of its energy, which would allow you to exceed this set speed. Derestricting, also known as tuning, is possible because the electric bike only has the limit because of the manufacturer — meaning that removing the manufacturer’s settings will enable the cycle to use its motor’s full power.

When the pedal assistance system is in place, it triggers the bike to slow down as it nears the 20 mph limit. Once that limit is reached, the e-bike will continue operating, but its motor will no longer assist you in speeding up. For example, when on a downhill, you may exceed 20 mph. The bike will allow you to do so if it is happening naturally, but the electric bike will not assist you in transcending the set limit.
