Electric motorcycles are light, quiet and expensive – which makes them attractive to thieves. Two people can lift a light model into a van in seconds. The good news: most thefts are opportunistic, and a few simple measures cut the risk dramatically.
How bikes usually get stolen
- from garages, sheds and yards where the bike is kept without an extra lock;
- left briefly outside a shop or at the track;
- from a trailer or vehicle while travelling;
- "scouted" in advance – thieves watch where bikes are kept.
1. Storage
- keep the bike in a locked space not visible from the street;
- secure it to a wall or floor anchor with a chain;
- use a cover – a bike nobody can see draws less attention;
- do not post photos that reveal where it is stored.
2. Locks
Several different locks beat one expensive lock: an alarmed disc lock, a heavy chain to a fixed object and a steering lock. The longer a theft takes, the less likely a thief is to try.
3. GPS tracker
The Monimoto 9 is a GPS tracker designed for electric motorcycles. It hides inside the bike, alerts your phone the moment the bike moves and shows its location, with long battery life. Even if the bike is stolen, there is a good chance of getting it back.
4. Documents and marking
- write down and photograph the frame (VIN) number;
- keep purchase documents and photos of distinctive details;
- consider hidden marking (for example with a UV pen).
5. Insurance
Ask your insurer about theft cover – especially for more expensive models. Some insurers offer discounts when a GPS tracker is fitted.
If your bike is stolen
- Report it to the police straight away with the VIN number.
- Check the GPS tracker location and pass it to the police – do not act on your own.
- Watch classified sites and social media.
- Notify your insurer.
